In research aimed at making computers even smaller and more powerful, two engineers at Duke University have made headway in the quest to control the beams of light generated by tiny lasers.
The two Duke scientists – Nan Marie Jokerst, professor of electrical and computer engineering, and Ph.D. student Sabarni Palit – found solutions that could prove particularly useful in battery-powered computers, such as handheld imaging and diagnostic devices.
The Duke lasers require minimal cooling or none at all, and they use little electrical energy to produce a light beam.
