Last week on CNBC, Intel President and CEO Paul Otellini outlined areas of growth in the computer markets. Intel experienced over 20% sales growth last year, and predicts it will continue double digit growth this year. The 10-minute interview with CNBC’s Carl Quintanilla is worth watching, see what he has to say about data center operators. Here are the highlights of Otellini’s comments:
- Overall, consumer markets are still soft, but growth areas are happening now
- The US and Western Europe markets are mature, but the “refresh cycle” of companies replacing PCs and servers is starting to happen, and should continue for the next 12 to 18 months
- The real growth markets are China and India
- Chip sales growth in consumer markets is being driven by tablet and smart phone sales
- Otellini sees a real ROI opportunity for data center managers to replace servers with smaller, faster and more power efficient models
- In the education market, he cites the example of Portugal which recently mandated to provide every student with a laptop
