A helicopter corporation is sponsoring a contest, asking entrepreneurs and companies that are willing to establish a spinoff at a new innovation center in Stamford to propose technology concepts that could be used on helicopters.
Chris Van Buiten, vice president of Sikorsky Innovations, gave an example of a better electronics cooling technology, which could reduce the number of fans needed, making helicopters lighter.
He said he hopes they get 100 applications. They plan to choose four companies sometime this spring.
Sikorsky has donated $100,000 that will help pay the salaries of two full-time and three part-time staffers at the 12,000-square-foot Stamford Innovation Center, and will continue to donate $100,000 a year to support the flexible work space.
The center is slated to open in a few weeks.
