As electric cars go to higher charging rates, better cooling will be needed. Direct Expansion, or DX, is a new cooling system that “uses the same refrigerant as used in your vehicle’s air conditioning system to cool the battery directly,” according to HybridCars.com.
DX eliminates liquid glycol, even has a cooling rate of 3-4 times higher, and simplifies the battery’s TMS.
Hybridcars.com reports that “DX allows higher charging power, reduced complexity, potentially reduced costs and it has the added safety advantage of eliminating the need for liquids entirely from the battery pack.”
So far, the BMW i3 has such a system and the LG Chem has a patent and a prototype.
