Due to a problem with the computer cooling system, 911 service was down for about four hours recently in Buffalo, New York’s Erie County.
According to Time Warner Cable News, the room at the Public Safety Campus that houses the 911 Dispatch overheated last Wednesday, and the county isn’t sure why the backup systems failed, but they are “working with partner companies to find out.”
“I’m not sure that they had the proper traps in place to make sure that the system would work if it failed in this matter, which was an overheating of the computers,” said Ed Rath, R-Erie County legislator.
Time Warner Cable News reported that the “safety mechanism” in this situation “is to shut the electronics down, notify authorities of a problem, and re-route the calls to four different dispatch centers throughout the county.” But “the system did not notify the proper people of the problem, and calls were only routed to two locations.”
“Power was restored to the overheated room around 5:45 a.m. and the dispatch system was working normally around 7 a.m,” reported Time Warner Cable News.
