Electronics manufacturer Fujitsu has released a unique new tablet computer capable of operating underwater while using a cooling fan to pump heat away from sensitive internal circuitry.
The Arrows Tab QH77/M is 2-in-1 computer that can be used both as a clamshell notebook computer and as a tablet computer when the display unit is detached. The casing houses an Intel Core i5-4200U microprocessor with a 15 watt thermal design power (TDP), an amount which makes it impossible to cool the processor with a fan-less structure, according to a staffer at a private view of Fujitsu’s new products quoted by Tech-On. Therefore, the addition of a cooling fan was necessary.
To prevent water damage, the tablet’s electronic components, including the processor, are contained within a sealed compartment that prevents water from entering. A separate compartment houses the cooling fan and heat sink, which floods with water when the tablet is submerged. Heat is transferred away from the components inside the sealed compartment to the compartment housing the fan and heat sink by a heat pipe, where it is then dissipated either by the fan or by water when the tablet is immersed.
The QH77/M complies with both the IPX5/7/8 waterproof standard and IP5X dustproof standards.
