Mercedes has rolled out a prototype of its new SLS AMG E-CELL electric supercar, which looks set for small series production. The prototype features four electric motors positioned near each of the wheels, which produce 392 kW and 880 Nm of instantaneous torque and acceleration of zero to 100 km/h in 4 seconds — just 0.2 seconds under the performance of the 6.3-litre V8 SLS … [Read more...]
Liquid Submersion Blade Server
Hardcore Computer, Inc., recently launched Liquid Blade™, a Total Liquid Submersion blade server. The initial Liquid Blade™ server platform, which is powered by two Intel® 5500 or 5600 series Xeon® processors running on an Intel S5500HV reference motherboard, addresses several major datacenter challenges, including power, cooling and space. Ultra-Green CPU Cooling Technology
NEC has developed an eco-friendly cooling system for CPUs, said to use 60% less energy than a water-cooling system and even 80% less than an air-cooling system. The core of the system is a liquid chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) substitute, which circulates around the CPU to draw away heat and has low greenhouse effects. NEC says the refrigerant begins boiling at around 50oC, changes … [Read more...]
Compact Water-Circulation System Prevents Stacks of Electronic Chips
A research team from the A*STAR Institute of Microelectronics and Nanyang University in Singapore has designed and built a water circulation system to cool stacks of integrated electrical circuits. “The heat must be removed from microchips to maintain a temperature within acceptable limits: less than 100 °C,” explains team-member Navas Khan from the Institute of … [Read more...]
Thermal Paper Draws Top Award at PCIM Conference
A paper on thermal aspects in power systems won a Young Engineer Award at this year’s PCIM (Power Electronics/Intelligent Motion/Power Quality) Europe Conference. The Young Engineer Award is presented to exceptional contributions from young professionals (under 35 years old). Andreas Munding of Liebherr-Elektronik GmbH and his co-authors were recognized for their paper, … [Read more...]
